Music is an important motif throughout Binding 13 and plays two key roles in the lives of Johnny and Shannon. First, it is a coping mechanism for both, helping Johnny deal with The Pressures of Athletic Excellence and Shannon handle The Psychological Effects of Trauma. Johnny regularly listens to music loudly in his car, after his awkward interactions with Shannon, and when he fails to explain to her how he feels. He also plays music loudly on the bus on the way to the rugby matches, blocking out everything around him in order to focus. Similarly, Shannon listens to her music to drown out the sounds of Joey and her father fighting.
Second, music serves as a source of bonding for the two characters. When they ride in the car together and Shannon looks through Johnny’s music, she realizes he is more like her than she previously thought. He plays the song “The Middle” by Jimmy Eat World, which repeats the lines “Everything, everything’ll be just fine. Everything, everything’ll be alright” and discusses the importance of living in and enjoying the moment—a direct reflection of the situation that he and Shannon are in, trying not to think about where their relationship will lead them. Similarly, while drunk in the pub, Johnny hears the song “Wicked Twisted Road” by Reckless Kelly and applies the lyrics—which compare teenage love to a “wicked twisted road”—to his feelings for Shannon. In the car, Shannon then brings up the same song and tells Johnny that she thinks of him when she hears it. Additionally, when she sees Johnny’s playlist of love songs with her name on it, it is the first time that she considers that Johnny may be attracted to her as well.
The photograph that Shannon and Johnny take together after the rugby match is a symbolic representation of their star-crossed love. Although for Johnny, it is just a simple picture—one of many that he has taken due to his rugby fame—for Shannon, it carries significant danger, providing a motive for her father to continue to abuse her. As such, it reflects the theme of The Psychological Effects of Trauma. Instead of enjoying the photograph as a record of an important relationship, she is forced to view it as a threat to her safety. In this way, the photograph is analogous to Johnny and Shannon’s relationship: Their mutual attraction could be a simple blessing for them both, but instead, it causes them stress, pain, and trauma as they try to fit it into their difficult lives.
Johnny’s groin injury is a physical manifestation of The Pressures of Athletic Excellence that he faces throughout the novel. Although the injury is a very real problem that may end his career, it is also something that causes him stress and anxiety beyond the physical pain. He constantly thinks about his injury and what it means for his career, subconsciously rubbing it—as Shannon notes—throughout the novel, not even aware that he is limping because of the physical pain that he is in. Additionally, the fact that the injury is to his groin and impedes his sexual function is also representative of his situation. Typically, he has sexual relations with older women, with no interest in a relationship beyond the physical and no desire to date girls his own age. However, when he meets Shannon, he is confused by his lack of desire to treat her as he has other women—instead interested in knowing her as a person and figuring out her life. The fact that he is physically unable to have sex with her because of his injury is presented as a physical manifestation of his complicated emotions, as he must learn to let himself heal—both physically and emotionally—before he is ready for real love.
