Chapters 15-18Chapter Summaries & Analyses

Chapter 15 Summary

As he sets the table for dinner, Brendan thinks about what he will have to do to interest Piper: “She’d make him work to keep her content, and he wanted that challenge” (167). He is ready to try new things for her. When he picks her up, he recognizes that Piper is going to try to keep things casual between them and make the night just about sex. But “what she made him feel wasn’t casual. Not one bit” (169). He looks forward to growing closer to her.

Chapter 16 Summary

Brendan serves her champagne and fish he cooked himself, and Piper is touched but also scared by her interest in him, and his in her. “She actually didn’t even know how to be more than a temporary hookup” (178), she thinks. She supports Brendan when he says he is building a second boat and plans to give the Della Ray to Fox, which he thinks will help him move on from the past. As they talk, Piper worries that she’s revealed too much; “the sexy smoke screen she’d been hiding behind had dissipated, leaving only her” (183).

She seduces Brendan by taking off her dress but is unsettled to realize that “this attraction was even more dangerous than she’d originally thought” (186). They pleasure each other orally, and Piper is jolted to experience “a real, authentic orgasm” (191). She realizes she can’t remain detached or pretend she doesn’t care about him, but she doesn’t want to become attached, either.

Brendan takes Piper back to her apartment and gives her a spare key to his house. She knows he is leaving for king crab season—which is how her father died—and she begs him to be careful.

Chapter 17 Summary

Piper and Hannah spend the two weeks of king crab season refurnishing the bar. When a storm hits as Brendan is due back, Piper panics, thinking about how Henry died. Fearing that something might happen to Brendan, she runs to his house so that she can feel close to him, lets herself in with her key, and falls asleep in his bed. Brendan is busy on the boat pulling the last of their traps. Usually, he isn’t concerned about a storm, but this one is keeping him from Piper. Then, it is hinted, an accident occurs.

Chapter 18 Summary

Piper wakes when Hannah calls to tell her there was an accident on the Della Ray and one of the crew is at the hospital. Frantic for Brendan’s safety, Piper rushes there in his truck. When she sees Brendan is safe, she tries to pretend she is just being neighborly, but Brendan sees that she is affected, and it clinches his feelings. Giving in to their strong emotions, Brendan and Piper sneak into an empty hospital room to have sex. Brendan does not have a condom with him, but Piper says she is taking birth control medication, so they don’t need protection. Brendan senses that Piper, again, wants to keep their connection purely physical, so he persuades her to admit she missed him. Piper experiences an orgasm during intercourse, a first for her, and she worries about Brendan’s ability to move her.

When Brendan says he is willing to work to win her, Piper snaps that she’s not available. They return to the hallway holding hands and run into Mick, who is there to visit the injured fisherman. Brendan feels disloyal and that he has disappointed his former father-in-law. But he has gotten Piper to admit they are more than friends.

Chapters 15-18 Analysis

These chapters cover the section of the romance plot where the characters fall in love and give in to their feelings for one another. Brendan is the first to realize that he wants to commit to Piper, which fits with his steadfast and determined character. Piper has thrown him out of the routines he established, and when he buys her champagne, he demonstrates that he wants to try to please her. Piper recognizes the effort he is making to impress her and that adds to her sexual desire. The plans he has set in motion to build his own boat and give the Della Ray to Fox show that Brendan has been preparing for some time to chart a new path. This is a signal to Piper that he might be emotionally available after all, and she doesn’t question that his interest in her is sincere.

The intensity of their sexual intimacy at dinner is another indication to Piper that she has entered new territory; her experience of orgasm with Brendan is evidence that he affects her as no one else has. The layer of artifice she was accustomed to wearing in Los Angeles is gone and she is being her real, authentic self. This vulnerability makes her react in fear when the storm hits Westport and she worries for Brendan’s safety. Being in his house is a way to pretend he is close.

When she runs to the hospital and finds Brendan is safe, her intense relief leaves Piper feeling disoriented, and she is eager to connect with him as soon as she can. Sex is the way to do this, and her decision that Brendan doesn’t need to wear a condom represents Piper’s willingness to do away with barriers between them. The intensity of their sexual pleasure signals that their connection is deepening and intensifying, and when Piper experiences a vaginal orgasm, it is another milestone, another indication that she is her real, vulnerable self with him. The hospital setting and the injured man represent the danger of Brendan’s job, and seeing Mick is a reminder not just of the losses they have both experienced but also of how the rest of the world might still see them.

Piper’s resistance to love is a key part of the romance plot that keeps the conflict alive and the plot moving. In a successful romance, the characters need internal conflict as well as external conflict that is resolved by the progression of their relationship. Brendan is ready for a deeper connection but Piper, at this point, is not. However, their sexual attraction holds a power over them that neither wants to walk away from.
