Chapter 35 Summary: “New York City, June 1944”

Viv attends a party at the Morgan Library, where she networks to drum up publicity for her event. She encounters Hale and reflects on how comfortable they have become with each other. She asks him why he never returned her letters, and he responds that he was afraid of being unworthy of her love and so pushed her away. He also believed she had fallen in love with Edward. She tells him the truth about her marriage: that if Edward died unmarried, his father’s fortune would be given to charity instead of to his wife. Viv married him as a way to help support his family. Returning to the subject of Viv’s event, Hale encourages her to seek out Althea in person.

One day they’re out together and see Deveraux. They talk briefly, but Deveraux quickly leaves with a Nazi officer.

Chapter 37 Summary: “New York City, July 1944”

Viv reveals that she’s planning on inviting the reclusive author Althea James, which the librarian finds shocking and hilarious. The librarian agrees to appear, and finally introduces herself as Hannah Brecht.

Chapter 38 Summary: “Berlin, May 1933”

Hannah arrives to collect Althea after she has been struck down by Diedrich. Once the women arrive safely home, Althea voices her concern for Hannah and Adam. Hannah admits she followed Adam one night to a high-profile meeting place of political leaders. She kisses Althea’s wrist, and Althea is finally able to admit her feelings for Hannah. They spend the night together. In the morning, Diedrich comes to Althea’s home and discovers them together.

Chapter 39 Summary: “Paris, March 1937”

Viv tells the driver, Joe, about her purpose in the town; Joe reveals that he’s Althea’s brother. Viv joins him for lunch and tells him about her plan to battle Taft’s censorship. Joe takes her to Althea’s cottage, where Viv bravely knocks on the door. Althea answers and immediately rejects Viv’s advance, slamming the door.

Althea is taken away and brought to an interrogation room. Diedrich enters and berates her for humiliating him. However, he does not harm her, and Althea struggles to understand her situation. She is held prisoner for 11 hours, until finally they release her.

Hannah arrives to care for her but is confused by Althea’s lack of physical assault. Otto arrives, frantically telling them that Adam has been captured. Hannah believes that Althea’s healthy state means that she cooperated with the Nazis and revealed Adam’s location. Althea protests her innocence and suddenly understands that Diedrich intentionally set her up. Hannah and Otto leave her behind.

Chapter 42 Summary: “Owl’s Head, Maine, July 1944”

Viv stays in the village and continues going to Althea’s house each day. On the fifth day, Althea brings Viv a cup of coffee before shutting the door, which Viv takes as a sign she’s wearing down.

After eight days of trying, Althea finally invites Viv for a walk. However, Viv upsets her when she suggests Althea writes as a way to earn forgiveness. The next day, Viv meets Althea again and invites her to her event. Althea is hesitant, fearing unwelcome publicity, and they talk about their favorite books. Finally, Althea agrees.

Chapter 43 Summary: “Paris, March 1937”

Hannah holds Deveraux at gunpoint and asks her for the truth about Adam’s capture. Deveraux admits she turned Adam in, knowing he was already on a self-destructive path, to regain the Nazis’ trust. However, she realizes that Deveraux couldn’t have known where to find Adam and determines that Otto was the true betrayer.

Chapters 35-43 Analysis

This section opens with a new turning point in Viv’s journey: She decides to seek out Althea in person. During this time, the novel develops her connection with Hale and heightens the tension surrounding her crusade against Senator Taft. Before she goes on her search for Althea, she visits the mysterious librarian and, through their shared reverence for books, is able to secure her aid. In addition, she is given a gift in the form of an admission: the librarian’s name, Hannah Brecht.

At this point in the novel, the three disparate threads begin to converge. Viv detours from her home ground to visit Althea’s home of Owl’s Head, the only dramatic change of place that happens directly on the page in either of the three interconnected stories. This section introduces the character Joe, who was mentioned briefly at the start but never seen. Viv’s goal of enlisting Althea’s help becomes its own miniature journey, beginning with Viv having the door slammed in her face and slowly building into a budding friendship. By the end of this section, each character’s path starts to come together into one inevitable finish.

Althea and Hannah’s separate narratives each gather momentum and power toward a cataclysmic betrayal. Althea is finally able to embrace her feelings for Hannah and is rewarded for her courage with a night of vibrant and authentic living. However, this is immediately taken away from her by Diedrich, seeking retribution for the slight that Althea had previously put into motion. After her stay with the Nazis, she is unfairly accused of betraying her new friends. In this moment, she loses everything she worked for and believed in.

Hannah encounters a similar trajectory when she learns that Deveraux has been seen in Paris. Revelations about Deveraux’s relationships encourage Hannah to look at her situation in a new way, leading her to uncover the truth and to her ultimate confrontation with her former friend. By the end, Hannah undergoes a similar difficult transformation as Althea: She loses her friendships with both Deveraux and Otto and is forced to acknowledge her own actions towards someone she loved.
